Back Tech Trailblazers, Empowering Women in the Digital Age
The tech industry has long been dominated by men, but the winds of change are blowing strong. Women are breaking barriers and making their presence felt in the tech world like never before. The importance of having women in the tech industry cannot be overstated, as their inclusion not only promotes diversity and equality but also leads to innovation and economic growth. So, what’s my take on diversity and inclusion? Let’s explore…
For me, actively promoting and supporting diversity and inclusion initiatives within the tech industry is the most effective way to empower women already in the channel and encourage more women to join. Working as a Senior Marketing Manager for Telefónica Tech UK&I, I have driven, hosted and presented various Women in Tech and International Women’s Day events to raise the importance of gender diversity.
These events are a great way to:
• Highlight female role models – women relate to seeing other women just like them. Sharing the success stories of women who have made significant contributions to the tech industry can help break gender stereotypes and encourage other women to write their own success stories.
• Support women in career progression – by advocating for equal pay, fair promotions and inclusive hiring practices for women in their tech careers, we can progress towards a more fair and equal workplace.
• Create supportive environments – by fostering an inclusive and welcoming culture within Telefónica Tech UK&I, we champion a support system that is crucial to women feeling valued, respected and supported in their professional growth.
• Educate – raising awareness among men about the underrepresentation of women in the industry not only broadens the conversation and scope of the gender diversity movement, but also demonstrates that gender diversity is a shared responsibility.
Why we need more women in tech?
Speaking of diversity and inclusion more generally - one of the most compelling arguments for gender diversity in the tech industry is that it brings diverse perspectives to the table. When women are involved in the design and development of tech products, they offer unique insights and experiences that can lead to the creation of more inclusive and user-friendly solutions. This diversity of thought results in products and services that cater to a broader audience, which is essential in today's globalised and interconnected world.
Innovation is at the heart of Telefónica Tech UK&I, with our products, services and teams constantly evolving in line with the everchanging tech landscape. Innovation constantly thrives in environments where diverse ideas are encouraged and valued. When women are part of the tech workforce, they contribute fresh ideas and approaches that can lead to groundbreaking innovations. By having women in the tech industry, we open the doors to a wider range of innovations that benefit society as a whole.
McKinsey reported that companies that prioritise gender diversity in the tech industry are more likely to experience economic growth and competitiveness on a global scale. Telefónica Tech UK&I’s diverse workforce attracts top talent from across the country, enhancing its ability to adapt to rapidly changing markets and customer needs.
Conclusion
The importance of having women in the tech industry is multifaceted and far-reaching. It's not just a matter of gender equality; it's about harnessing the full potential of human talent and creativity to drive innovation, economic growth and positive social change. As we continue to work towards a more inclusive tech industry, we must recognise and celebrate the achievements of women in technology while striving to create an environment where everyone, regardless of gender, can thrive and contribute to the exciting future of tech.
For the reasons discussed throughout this blog, it is therefore an honour to be recognised as a finalist at CRN's Women in Diversity in Channel Awards 2023. Awards ceremonies like these are a great way to celebrate women in the channel and for us to connect with other likeminded, ambitious and inspirational women. This recognition is not just mine; it symbolises the collective strength of every woman breaking barriers, defying odds and shaping a future of inclusivity.
